Your Health as Related to Your Complex Environment

Let's say the sloping line in handout B represents our health in general. From the normal-plus level down to the potential disease level area. Although this chart is oversimplified, it does give us a better picture of what we are all presently dealing with on a day to day basis in our lives, and also, in general, what we are trying to accomplish here. It's very sad but true, that we have no idea where we are at on any such line of wellness, up in the healthy areas or down in the disease area, nor do we have the ability to exercise any organized degree of control over our position on any such line.

 

The disease area is where our present health care system primarily operates. In fact, the present health care system is often referred to as a disease-oriented medical system. We hear a lot about this area, because this is where most research and other medical activities take place, not up in this pre-disease stage area, or for sure not up in the normal-plus area.

(Although I am using only one line here (in handout A) for discussion, and simplification, purposes, the use of a number of lines, possibly representing major body systems, may in fact provide a more realistic representation).

 

We are told that major diseases such as most cancer, heart problems and the like usually take years to materialize, yet how often is someone given a complete physical examination and a clean bill of health, only to come down with the symptoms of one of these diseases within weeks? Obviously, the person was not likely in good health at the time of the examination; he or she was in reality down in this disease area, or pre-disease stage area, not up here, and for sure not up here in the normal plus area. The hundreds of health level conditions from the disease level up through the normal plus level would be fully established by this system. Currently you are diagnosed to have some level of diseased, or with the absence of that diagnosis, considered to be normal and sent home. What about the hundreds of subtle conditions in between—for example such as your system being slightly out of balance with minor corrections required?

 

Unfortunately, at this time, the way we usually become aware that we are not normal is when we develop the physical symptoms of a disease or from the results of a lab test. Instead of being up in the normal area, we are sadly down in the disease area or close to it. We often go from what we consider to be a condition of good health to abruptly finding out we have a disease, sometimes a very serious one, often causing a major change in our life, to often with no warning or opportunity for any form of intervention to prevent it. We then can only hope that the disease is curable or at least treatable.

 

For all practical purposes, basically we are left completely in the dark to struggle with where we are really at on our own. Most of the time we have no idea of how close we are to the potential disease levels. Operating under these conditions most of us just do the best we can, hoping to help ourselves with our level of health, whether it’s through what we eat, an exercise program, what we try to avoid, etc. This is a very weak and vulnerable position to continually be in, but it's currently a fact of life. Unfortunately, it’s about all we can do. That is very sad indeed with the technology available to provide us far far more.

 

The proposed system, would not only provide you far more knowledge about your true level of health, but in addition, and just as critical, usually how you could have far more control over that level of wellness. The contrast between the current health care situation and what the system being proposed here could provide in terms of preventive and wellness knowledge might be compared to someone just feeling around in the dark, and then having someone come along and turn on the lights.

 

This article discusses a core element of the proposed national research center and how the supercomputers can relate vital data to disease and prevention and wellness. It also discusses a system that has the means of not only closely monitoring your health in great detail but far more control over it as well.

 

 

Now let's take a look at the environmental factors:

 

In order to exert control over our level of wellness, we clearly also need to take into account external elements that affect our health, and of course that includes our personal environment.

 

In discussing our environment, we will use the word "environment" in its broadest sense, to include foods, nutrition, and exercise programs so on. However, bringing the environment into the health picture vastly complicates setting up any simple electronic processing system. It requires a far more powerful and sophisticated medical information system, but it's absolutely essential. Any system that does not include the environment cannot be effective. The current high levels of disease and medical expense would only continue. This system does include the environmental elements.

 

So, how do we go about bringing in such large and diverse amounts of data into some type of format or system so that they can be evaluated as to their affect on our health?

These are just a few examples of the many environmental factors that we are exposed to that can affect our health.

 

If we look at the upper left side of the page we see typical foods such as tomatoes broccoli and grapefruit, and directly across the page are listed some of the potential concerns for contamination, such as insecticides and herbicides, both widely used in this type of farming now days.

 

Just below that on the left are meats, poultry, dairy products, and eggs. Here we have additional potential contaminants we need to be especially concerned about--antibiotics and hormones--which are used very extensively by the farmers providing these products. (There are details in the book on the excessive use of chemicals by farmers).

 

We also have water. Well water is usually inspected by the county for bacteria only, not chemicals.

 

Then, last, but for sure not least, we have medicines, which could well be some of our most dangerous exposures. There definitely needs to be a far more reliable means of testing the typical pharmaceutical drug. In addition, there is a great need for more effective, friendlier and less expensive medicines. Extensive testing of natural elements is part of this system, which will be discussed later.

 

Sadly, we don't even really know which chemicals we are ingesting or inhaling let alone the quantity. Also, what about the synergistic effects of these chemical combinations? At this time none of this is known!

 

Because this involves precious human health, and even life itself, this haphazard method of controlling food and water supply contamination, in this day and age of technology, is very sad indeed, and in my opinion absolutely unnecessary!

 

Capturing the environmental information for each individual at first seems almost insurmountable, but if we look into it further and with the help of some of the latest technology it is not as difficult as it first appears. For example, one use of technology, that would be very effective and easily applied, is to convert the checkout counter at supermarkets to easily transfer your supermarket orders to a special home computer, by merely having the credit card reader converted over to also read a plastic card you could carry with you. You could pass the card through the card reader the same as a credit card. The reader would recognize it for the type of card it is, read the telephone number on it and transfer details of the total order to a special home computer. This information could be easily downloaded later for use in a health report. Not only would that provide a total list of what you purchased, and avoid detail work on your part, but it would also provide the critical brand names. This would be very valuable in terms of research, in monitoring the quality of food. When significant health problems arose with a particular product, the research and diagnostic computers would be able to actually identify the brand.

 

This system would be very practical because the supermarkets already have all that store product information on their store computer systems, and such a system would require primarily the conversion of the credit card readers.

 

Also an environmental staff person would be mandatory in each medical office operation to help input, all environmental data for the patient or individual. This expert’s wages would likely be reimbursed by the government, at least initially, from the huge savings in health care expenses provided by the new system—savings in the hundreds of billions of dollars (there is a small chapter on the economics involved). It should be noted that the environmental data input would be used for research purposes only for the first two or three years, but could likely be used for diagnostic purposes later (there are details in the book on how and why this is so).

 

 

 

 

Health and Fitness Level: What is Your True Level of Health?

This article is about the completion of a key element of the proposed medical information system--the national research center.

 

To realize the most from this article you need to read the 3 previous articles. However, I will try and summarize some of the key points of those articles here.

 

The most effective means of evaluating a person’s health would of course be through some direct means of looking into the human organism to see what is truly taking place. Fortunately, as strange as it may seem, the human body does provide such a window in the form of its biochemical makeup. Furthermore, even more encouraging, there is a science already fully developed that is taking full advantage of that body phenomenon called clinical laboratory science. These are major factors in the success any  advanced health care system.

 

I highly recommend that you take a minute here to read what the experts have to say on that matter by clicking on the link (called page 18) at the end of this article. These experts are from text books located in the laceType>UniversitylaceType> of laceName>MichiganlaceName>’s Medical Library.

 

As described in the link reference on page 18, the advantages of the biochemical makeup of the body is very impressive indeed. Clinical laboratory science is a highly computerized and a very rapidly moving industry. Hundreds of critical tests are now available for use. That industry is an important part of the current health care system. The blood or tissue tests that your doctor orders for you when he or she is suspicious of a given medical condition that needs verification usually involves clinical laboratory science.

 

The key difference between the proposed national medical information system and the current health care system lies in the difference in use of this data. The current health care system primarily uses it to evaluate a disease condition whereas the proposed system would apply it on a broader scale basis to include disease prevention and wellness—taking advantage of far more of what clinical science has to offer.

The proposed medical information system would use a completely new and far different type of application of clinical laboratory data. Far larger test profiles (100 blood constituents taken from one blood test) would be used in conjunction with a very sophisticated national research system for massive correlation to human health—including disease prevention and wellness.

 

Following is a remaining key element of the proposed system.

Article 3 was discussed with the use of handout A. A link to handout A is provided at the end of this article and should be referred to again here. This article will discuss the underlying technical strengths of that system by showing briefly how and why the health data fed into the national research center is so effective in its correlation to human health and wellness.

 

Referring back to the 100 test profile pattern discussed in article 3, it was shown that the 100 individual bits of test information along with patient environmental and patient data would be fed to the national research computer center (marked case #1). The research computers would record the profile pattern results and correlate that particular combination of test results to a particular health related condition. With the size of this 100 test profile pattern, as discussed earlier, there would be literally trillions of possible combinations involved. Of those trillions of possibilities, there would conservatively end up being at least millions of what we would call significant combinations that would represent significant health related information. The laceName>NationallaceName> laceName>ResearchlaceName> laceType>CenterlaceType> would then relate that data to the individual's current health condition, history, family history, the individual's environment, and also to the same data of tens of millions of other patients. This is an enormous amount of health information for the supercomputers to pull together and relate to human health conditions!

 

 In addition, there would no doubt also be smaller sets of tests of interest within that overall 100 test profile, such as separate groups of hormones, enzymes, antibodies and other special tests that could also be read and analyzed as separate group combinations as well. Many of us realize how very important these various groups are to our well being.

 

Let me stop here and review this for a moment. We talk about   millions of significant health data combinations. So why is it necessary for such a breadth of examination capacity? Basically, because of the extreme complexities involving our environment, our health and of course their complex inter-relationship. For example, if we (as individuals) try to determine what it is in our environment that is having an effect on our health, either positive or negative, we know it's usually very difficult to do. We know there are literally dozens of elements (variables) in our personal environment that could affect our health. So how do we go about narrowing it down to determine what it is in a person's environment that is likely affecting his or her health?

 

The system described here does it in two ways, it uses the extreme reading breadth of the profile pattern (as discussed in article 3), to read an individuals test results along with the input of the environmental and doctor's medical examination report. It was shown that this data was then fed into the national research center system and compared to millions of other patient’s health conditions, environments and test results.

 

This comparison, to the millions of other patients, would soon be very effective in narrowing the unknown element, or elements, down to the common denominator (or denominators) of what it is in the environment that normally affects people's health in certain ways. Very few patients would have the exact same environment and health conditions.  Comparing millions of patient’s health to their environmental exposures would provide a very effective screening process. The results of this research would then be fed back into the state diagnostic computers to diagnose specific individuals based on their individual profile pattern results and their individual environmental and physical examination reports.

 

 

This article discusses the key to success for any highly advanced health care system, and also the sophisticated features of the proposed medical system’s research center.

Article 3 of 7 Health News: Core Technical Strength of new System

 

This article gets right to the very core of the system. In the last article we discussed the profile pattern. We will now discuss how that profile pattern of information is applied.

I am going to intentionally jump right into the middle of how the profile pattern would be applied, so don’t be concerned if you are unable to fit all the pieces of the system together immediately.

 

Hopefully this block diagram handout will help bring the 100 test profile pattern of health information more into perspective to give you a better idea as to the extreme breadth and depth of the information gathering capacity of this system. I might add here that the same laboratory (100 test) profile is used thorough-out the system--at both the national research center and the state diagnostic centers.

 

The top block diagram represents the 100 separate tests at five graduations each--approximately 100 dots across with five lines of dots representing the 5 possible test levels for each test.

 

Below this block, on the left side of page, you see the two block diagrams that represent the individual's health as well as environment. We know that any blood test taken reflects directly on our health and indirectly on our environment. This is represented on the far left with the dotted lines and arrows, showing that the blood tests reflect on both.

 

The vertical line extending from the bottom of the large 100-test block represents connection of the output of the 100 test profile pattern to both the research center (lower right) and the state diagnostic center. 

 

In addition to the profile pattern test result information, the new medical research information system also needs to know just what the individual's actual physical environment and present health conditions are. In other words, just what is it physically that those 100 blood tests are actually representing, what are they testing? We will be discussing environmental issues shortly and we will come back and explain the environmental report data. As for the health data output, shown here, that will be information provided by the physician as the result of a physical examination, including patient and family health histories.

 

All of the data fed into the laceType>StatelaceType> laceName>DiagnosticlaceName> laceType>CenterlaceType>

and the laceName>NationallaceName> laceName>ResearchlaceName> laceType>CenterlaceType> are provided by the physician’s office—including the results of the blood tests, the environmental report, and the patient’s physical examination report.

 

Please note that this information, being all from one individual, is referred to as case #1 where it enters the laceName>NationallaceName> laceName>ResearchlaceName> laceType>CenterlaceType> on the lower right hand section of the chart. The same information is fed into the state diagnostic center, but for now we will skip over that, and concentrate on the laceName>ResearchlaceName> laceType>CenterlaceType>. Please note that on the bottom of the laceName>ResearchlaceName> laceType>CenterlaceType> block diagram, there is also a line that represents a reflection of tens of millions of other cases of input. All of the above input information would be repeated tens of millions of times from tens of millions of individuals (The motivation needed for use of the system by individuals and patients is fully discussed in the book. There would be very strong motivation even in the early stages of the system).

 

Now, if you would, please refer to the far lower left-hand corner of the handout for a minute, in order to better understand why (and how) the 100 individual tests provide far more information than the 100 individual bits of data. Let's take a look at a situation that most of us are very familiar with. Among other considerations, common tests by our doctor during an office visit are body temperature and two blood pressure measurements. I have these three tests shown, drawn in at one of ten possible levels.

 

As an example let's say your body temperature was very high, at 106. Now that in itself would of course be very significant, but it would obviously not provide the doctor with enough information for an accurate diagnosis. Say we now bring the blood pressure tests into the picture, the doctor would also of course need to know what those specific test level results were. Now there are three test result levels involved and if the results of any one of the three vary significantly it could obviously affect the diagnosis—of what our physical condition is. Most of us realize how important these test level results are. So, the diagnosis is, in effect, limited to the relationship of the individual test results to each other, which will be referred to for simplification as the “combination of the test results”. We can see that each combination of test the level results would represent a certain health related condition, -- especially with the use of more tests.

 

Also, to illustrate the rapid buildup of test result data, it’s difficult to believe, that mathematically we actually have 1000 possible combinations involved in this limited three test example. These are combinations that could be read by a computer for possible meaningful results. All 1000 combinations would not likely provide meaningful information and of course could be eliminated where it was shown that those particular combinations were of little or no value. However, one could expect a large percentage to be of significance, especially so if the computer was used to also correlate all of the possible results directly to human health conditions.

 

By observing the very core of the medical information system application, it becomes more obvious as to its potential effectiveness.

We just read in article 1 about the very extensive biochemical makeup of the human organism, and how it relates to clinical laboratory science. Now let’s see how clinical laboratory science takes advantage of that biochemical makeup with many almost unbelievable breakthroughs and what those breakthroughs could mean to you. Some of the recent breakthroughs made in clinical laboratory science can be viewed by clicking on the link at the end of this article.

 

When we observe the direct relationships of enzymes to all our major organs and body functions, it gives us some idea of the enormous insight these clinical laboratory tests can provide into the function of the human organism. And, this involves not only the enzymes, but also the hormones, antibodies and the many other special proteins as well. This is an enormous amount of vital health data that needs to be fully exploited for the benefit of the public.

 

It was very surprising as to the amount of advanced analytical data found available during  research. It was found to be very exciting because, under the right conditions, of the great potential that such developments could provide in terms of health care. When one looks closely at the availability of this very extensive and highly advanced analytical data on one hand, and the high levels of chronic disease and suffering on the other, it becomes obvious that what is needed is some means of harnessing these analytical elements and relating them directly to human health on a broad scale basis, for the purpose of reducing chronic disease and raising the level of wellness. So how can the public possibly hope to capitalize of such massive amount of such vital health related information? Obviously an electronic processing system of some sort would be required to process the data and relate it to human health and wellness.

 

Such a system would take clinical laboratory science to a new and different level of application. In addition to its limited use in testing a patient for a disease or lack thereof (which is primarily what clinical laboratory science is used for today) it would also be applied to individuals, on a broader scale, for the purpose of analyzing a state of wellness. Such an application would not in any way interfere with its present use on the disease level.

 

Basically, instead of using clinical laboratory science for one, or even several tests, to evaluate a disease condition, there would be a very broad application of highly selected blood tests, given to a person in a state of apparent wellness. This would include up to 100 separate blood tests called constituents which would be processed from one blood sample drawn from the individual (likely even more than 100 tests would eventually be used). For maximum effectiveness, the tests selected, and even the exact quantity, would be determined by the clinical laboratory scientists and other medical experts. They would carefully select the most ideal 100 blood tests for this type of application. This overall set of tests is called a profile. Once the profile is applied to an individual (or patient), that individual’s test results are referred to as a profile pattern. 

 

If we were to use 100 tests for example, each of the 100 tests would reflect a reading at one of a number of possible output levels. For discussion purposes we will use 5 possible levels. The actual number of graduations would no doubt vary somewhat. Significantly, even though we have 100 individual bits of information, as significant as each of those special test results would be, the amount of available information is not limited to those 100 individual bits of data. This is a major consideration in the design of this type of system.

 

The 100 test profile pattern would be analyzed by the computers by reading the test result level of each individual test, and then relating each of those test results to one another and thus establishing a specific combination. At only 5 possible levels for each test, we end up with literally trillions of possible combinations, each of which could be significant in terms of vital health information.

 

But, before even the design of such a computer system is discussed, another issue needs to be discussed, the careful consideration of confidential patient information especially as it relates to the use of large computer systems. The confidentiality of medical records is of course very important to everyone—especially so in this information age—the public would not allow it to be compromised.

 

Great care must be exercised in avoiding any such exposures in the design of a large computer system, or even the implied threat of any such exposures. However, on the other side of the coin, it would be very sad indeed if, for whatever reason we were blocked from taking full advantage of our most powerful technology, the computer, in assisting us with our most precious asset, our health.

 

Fortunately, such a system can be designed to completely avoid the confidentiality issue. No confidential patient medical data would need to be either, transmitted to, or stored in, any of the large computer systems. All confidential patient data would be completely contained in the physician’s office, same as the current policy. This is a system that would provide for the full use of the supercomputer power that we do so desperately need. Computers are used for many types of applications today, as most of us are aware, this application would be taking advantage of the assimilative and correlative powers of the machine.

 

In addition to the above special computer processing design features to prevent the possible exposure of confidential patient data, an added feature could also be easily designed into the overall system that would greatly improve the confidentiality of medical records even stored in the doctor’s office.

I would like to speak tonight about a new application of existing technology that could very soon have an almost unbelievable impact on your life.

 

Most health books are referred to as "How To" type of books because they are basically designed to help you help yourself. This book is different; it's about a major change in the health care system, a change that would provide breakthroughs in human health and life style, far beyond anything we have ever seen.

 

The current health care system is outstanding in many respects, in fact it’s known world wide for its expertise in trauma care, surgery capabilities, and many other forms of emergency care along with the numerous other areas of expertise. It’s something that is very valuable to all of us, and will no doubt continue to be a very important part of our life. Unfortunately, however, as outstanding as the health care system is in these critical areas, it also has a major weakness that causes an enormous amount of unnecessary physical suffering and medical expense. That weakness is the failure of the medical system to prevent the continuing existence of very high levels of chronic disease. The changes in the medical system being proposed here tonight would dramatically change that.

 

Over a 100 million people in this country are suffering with chronic disease--that is more than one out of every three of us. Furthermore, many of these diseases are of a very serious nature, including the major terminal and crippling diseases that we are all too familiar with and too often a witness to within our own family, circle of friends and neighbors.

 

Millions are truly suffering—and with some of these diseases, to often terribly.

 

And, it doesn't end there, even those of us that are fortunate enough to avoid the diseases still have to live with the continual threat, along with the excessively high cost of health care that such high levels of disease creates.

 

There are those that believe that because many of these diseases have been around forever, that maybe we just have to live with them. Until now that may well have been the case. Fortunately, however, technology has now caught up to this segment of the health care system as well. It can now bring disease prevention and wellness levels of expertise not only up to, but even exceed, the high level of perfection that most of the rest of the health care system presently enjoys.

 

Usually any form of successful entry into the health care field is introduced directly through the medical profession itself, whether it involves the introduction of new equipment, new tools, new systems, or new concepts. Furthermore, those additions are usually carefully designed around supporting the current medical system. The system being proposed here is designed to bring more balance into the overall health care system with far more emphasis on the individual’s and public’s best interest. This would be accomplished by introducing into the health care system an effective preventive and wellness program, basically in the form of an addition to the current medical system.

 

The proposed system involves the addition of a highly sophisticated national medical information system, very unique for a number of reasons. First, not only is it designed to more fully accommodate the needs of the patient and the public, but it’s also a system that would be legislated into existence and controlled by the public through a public commission.

 

Another logical question that comes up is, how can an electronic engineer with no medical background, possibly hope to accomplish anything like this in health care?

 

The answer to that is very simple, because primarily what is required here is a special electronic processing system that has the capacity to capture key health data already established by the medical experts and correlate that data to human health in an effective, thorough and efficient manner. As mentioned, it involves a highly advanced national medical information system, completely new to the health care industry.

 

There are basically two technologies involved here. They include highly advanced clinical laboratory science--a branch of the current medical system--and advanced computer technology, including supercomputers.

 

With most of us, our knowledge of clinical laboratory science is limited to what we are exposed to through our physician. Whenever we have a questionable health problem our physician will usually "run" some lab tests. Most of these tests involve clinical laboratory science.

 

What most of us don't know is that CLS is sort of a separate branch of the current medical system, and is a very rapidly advancing science, in fact so much so that it is far exceeding the capability of the present medical system to fully utilize all of its latest developments. In recent years, the industry has become highly computerized both in its laboratories and research. 

 

Lets read a couple of paragraphs from the book that I believe you will find very interesting, one involves the bio-chemical make-up of the human body (primarily what CLS is based on) and the second discusses major progress recently made in clinical laboratory science and what this progress could mean to us.

 

First, let's take a look at the bio-chemical aspects of the human body. These statements I will be reading from the book are opinions and statement by experts in the clinical laboratory science field. Most of them are referenced from text books located In the University of Michigan Medical Library. This is located on page 18 of the book--please see attached copy.

Health Wellness and Disease Prevention

Are you satisfied with your current health care system?

Would you be interested in a change in that system that would reduce the current high levels of disease and the cost of health care by over 40% in addition to numerous other health benefits?

A series of articles discussing such changes in the health care system will begin here on July 17th.

The proposed system would involve an application of the latest and most powerful technology available today?

That also raises the question as to why that technology, if in fact available, is not presently being applied by the current health care system.

Our image of the current medical system is strongly influenced by the media. The average person is so indoctrinated by an almost daily barrage by the media on all the wonderful high tech medical research that is taking place in addition to all of the huge future medical breakthrough promises, that sometimes it just appears it would be impossible to improve on the current health care system--that the medical system of today just couldn’t get anymore sophisticated or better than it is. Furthermore, if any such new system were in fact possible it would seem logical that it would be introduced by the current medical system itself.

However, consider this; what if the new technology application being discussed here would drastically cut into both the huge profits generated by the present medical system, in addition to severely curtailing its power? Might that be  motivation to tread lightly when considering any new technology applications?
